Our sedation options
Nitrous oxide is a mild, inhaled sedative that helps children relax during treatment while staying fully awake and responsive. Sometimes called “happy air,” it’s delivered through a small mask and wears off quickly after the visit. It’s an ideal option for children who need just a little help staying calm in the chair.
For children with extensive treatment needs or severe dental anxiety, IV sedation may be the best choice. This deeper level of sedation is provided in-office by a board-certified dental anesthesiologist, ensuring your child’s safety and comfort from start to finish. It allows us to complete multiple treatments in one visit, so your child can rest peacefully while we restore their smile.
Sedation is only one tool in our approach. At Shiny Happy Smiles, we believe emotional safety is just as important as physical safety. We take time to explain, connect, and guide children through treatment using techniques grounded in trust and empathy. Our behavior guidance philosophy helps kids feel seen, supported, and respected throughout their care journey.

from start to finish
Explaining what to expect
We introduce the “happy air” mask in a friendly, non-intimidating way and explain how it works in simple, age-appropriate language. Most kids are curious and excited to try it.
Administering nitrous oxid
Once your child is comfortable, we place a small mask over their nose and begin the gentle flow of nitrous oxide mixed with oxygen. Your child will stay awake and responsive, but feel calm and relaxed.
Performing treatment
With your child feeling more at ease, we proceed with their dental treatment. Throughout the appointment, we monitor them closely to ensure they’re safe and comfortable.
Quick recovery
As soon as treatment is complete, we turn off the nitrous and provide 100% oxygen. The effects wear off quickly, and most children are ready to return to normal activities shortly afterward.

Yes. All of our sedation methods are designed specifically for pediatric patients and follow strict safety guidelines. IV sedation is administered by a licensed anesthesiologist, and we carefully monitor your child throughout their visit to ensure a safe and comfortable experience.
That depends on the type of sedation. With nitrous oxide, your child remains awake and aware but more relaxed. With IV or general anesthesia, your child will be asleep throughout the procedure and monitored by a dedicated anesthesia provider the entire time.
We’ll walk you through each option during your consultation, explain the benefits and risks, and help you decide what’s best based on your child’s age, treatment needs, comfort level, and medical history. Our goal is to make sure you feel informed, confident, and supported.
